Honey Harvesting at Queens County Farm

Honey harvesting is an amazing experience! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to use the same tools that beekeepers use to uncap and extract raw honey from the hive.

The Queen Bee of Backyard Bees will walk you through the process. You’ll bee absolutely amazed at how the bees organize their hive and  and make their special local honey.

This is the first year that these bees have lived at Queens County Farm so the honey harvest may be smaller than at other apiaries – but it will bee just as delicious. Honey from each hive is unique- in scent, color, and consistency. You must see it to bee-lieve it!

The Honey Harvesting Class

This class is a hands on experience. You will be doing some work and you will be getting a little sticky.

The only bee in the classroom will be the Queen Bee of Backyard Bees. She’ll walk you through the process and share tips and stories about honey harvesting based on her years of experience.

You will have the chance to:

  • See, touch, and LIFT a full super of honey.
  • Use extracting tools to uncap a frame of honey
  • Hand crank the honey extractor
  • Fill up your own jar with freshly extracted and filtered honey

Honey takes a little while to go through the filtration process so while we wait, the Queen Bee will have some snacks and a relaxing experience for you.

We don’t know what the summer will hold for the bees – it’s been so hot! This may be your only opportunity to harvest honey at Queens County Farm this season.

An entertaining, educational afternoon. I learned how much I didn’t know about bees and their process while meeting new people and actually doing the work of extracting honey ourselves. The Queen Bee was a wonderful teacher who created a comfortable enjoyable atmosphere. The class was well worth it. And the honey is amazing.

This was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in bees. It was fun and informative and the bonus was getting to take home a very delicious jar of honey. I also really enjoyed watching the bees at work in the apiary. Thank you Kathy!
